In Korean the word for the Hapkido "yell" is Kiyap.  It literally means "spirit yell".  Screaming or yelling is a natural response of the inner spirit, so the yelling of a martial artist is an amplification of the inner spirit.

The spirit yell shows that you are confident and ready - just like soldiers yell when they charge up a hill in battle.  You can determine the confidence a student has in themselves and in their technique by their Kiyap.

An opponent is discouraged and will be reluctant to fight when someone yells loudly and confidently at them.

The Kiyap comes deep from within - call up the air from your diaphragm and belt out a low-sounding, fearsome spirit yell.  (no high pitched squeals please...)
